I fell in love with this chasen the moment I saw it, and after having waited only a week I received the whisk today! I used it for my afternoon practice. It's a dream to hold - so light and flexible. Unlike some whisks it retained it's shape well after being used repeatedly during an hour or so of practice, and I feel sure it will be my preferred whisk for many a long year....the quality of material and craftsmanship is the highest I've seen that's available to overseas buyers, and the price is very reasonable - such quality often costs considerably more.
On a side note, please whenever possible support traditional craftsmen like Yasaburo Tanimura sensei; with their beautiful craft they are doing something that's essential to the spirit of tea - making their tools with thought and affection. |

This chasen is of very high quality, superbly crafted, and extremely functional. The chasen I have been using is about two years old, is a Takayama using white bamboo, but has fewer tines as it was designed for both thick and thin types of matcha. It was finally wearing out so I picked up the black bamboo Takayama from Yuuki-Cha. It has more tines so they are more flexible. it was absolutely effortless getting Yuuki-Chas Yame matcha to froth; it literally took but a few seconds and had far less lumps. A few more seconds of whisking would probably have eliminated those as well. The type of whisk and number of tines is very important (as is the chawan) for matcha to turn out correctly with the layer of fine-bubbled foam on top and few if any lumps. This whisk works very well with the thin type matcha; I don't have the thick type on hand to try. I can't speak for the longetivity as I've only used this chasen twice, but judging from the craftsmanship it should last a long time if used and stored properly. I rate this 5 stars for both craftsmanship and functionality. If one knows how these are made and that the process is all by hand, it also qualifies as a miniature work of art! |
