A superior first flush organic hojicha green tea from Kagoshima that is made, not from late harvest leaves as so many hojicha are, but instead from first harvest Spring leaves and a small percentage of stems.

Organic hojicha made from first harvest leaf material is not all that uncommon in Japan. In fact, the organic growers we deal with pretty much always present first harvest hojicha in their tea range because they know it offers vastly superior taste and aroma to the very cheap late harvest hojicha teas on the market.

This one is certainly no exception to the above rule, and has a very delicious distinctive sweet roast and aroma, and is not bitter, astringent, smokey, or flat at all. Can be enjoyed year round, but is especially nice and comforting in the fall or winter months, and can also be prepared cold during the summertime.

I have fallen in love with roasted Japanese teas (Hojicha) a long time ago, and I am always surprised, especially in the Western world (but also even in Japan), that the many subtil nuances of Hojicha are not valued more: depending on the original tea before roasting, the roasting method, and the duration of roasting, one can end with very different teas---and there are at least as many flavors of Hojicha as there are of Gyokuro. Yuuki-cha gains many points in my book for showcasing some very original Hojicha. I'm reviewing the May 2011 edition of the Kagoshima Hojicha. The taste is very smooth, some of the sweetest Hojicha teas I've tasted. The earthy final note present in many other Hojicha is here absent---which is quite a refreshing change. One surprising fact about this tea is that I feel that it has some very pleasant undertones of mango!! Definitely one of the two or three best Hojicha I have tasted thus far.

Upon opening the bag, I was stuck by a roasted, almost coffee-like aroma. The brewed tea is clear and pure with a wonderful deep amber colour. Smooth, comforting and earthy, this hojicha tastes great on its own to warm up and relax, but could be very nice with a meal or dessert. Another excellent Yuuki-Cha hojicha!

This is the second hojicha I taste in my life so don't expect this review to be very reliable. But this Hojicha is years light better than my first one (organic too, bought in Spain). I love the elegant roasty smell and taste. And the price is very good! It makes me want to try the other two Hojichas in this shop and that is what I will do!
