This year's Kagoshima Kuradashi Kabusecha comes from 2010 Spring harvested shade grown leaves made not from the excellent Okumidori cultivar as in previous years, but from an amazing newer cultivar known as Asanoka! For this kabusecha the tea bushes were covered for around 15 days prior to harvesting after which they were uncovered and harvested. The harvested leaves were then deep steamed, fully processed, and placed into storage. The leaves have been aging ever since then (Spring 2010).

To age the tea leaves the grower places them in a special designated storage facility, and takes them from there as and when we need them. This unique aging process is known as kuradashi in Japanese which needs a good deal of expertise to achieve. The idea behind this type of aging process of tea leaves is to take away any flavors that might have been a little too prominent or harsh in Spring and replace them with deliciously deep sweet mellow flavors. Shade grown teas that age well like this can easily be kept for 2-3 years and usually become more and more deliciously sweet as time passes.

The taste of this kabusecha is incredibly theanine-rich! It has a very deep sweet mellow flavor and boasts an excellent refreshing aroma. In order to bring out the desired sweet taste it is preferable to use a high leaf to water ratio with low temperature water of around 60°C/140°F-65°C/149°F for the first infusion. After the first infusion you can gradually increase the temperature with each infusion. Once you find the preferred brewing parameters you'll be enjoying a delicious cup of organic Japanese green tea!

Uplifting is certainly the word for this deep green Kabusecha. The richness and depth of flavour is so unusual, complex and hard to remember. Needs to be tasted again and again! Very smooth and mellow.

very impressive. It is both uplifting and calming. I drink it in the morning to ease the pain of waking up. A slow butt wiggle turns into full on dancing by the end of the cup. The flavor is great. Sometimes Sencha is too nutty and bold for me, sometimes Gyokuro too sweet and mild. It's already been said, but this tea has the flavors of both in just the right balance. When it comes out again I'm just going to splurge and order a Kilo.

My husband and I utterly adore this tea! I think what makes it so inspiring to drink is its complexities of flavors. The first steep reminds us of gyokuro, a sweet richness of flavor is present. The second steep is reminiscent of sencha and the third steep is a combination of the two teas. It’s these types of complexities which we love to find in tea. Thank you so very much, we’ll most definitely be back for some more very soon.

I tried this on a recommendation from a friend. It really is superior to the organic teas I have tried elsewhere. Deep umami flavor and the best part of all the infusions are the richest shade of green. I enjoyed it enough to order two more packs!

A must try! I tasted this tea for the first time yesterday and it is probably one of my favorites. The color is a beautiful green, probably the most gorgeous color of tea I have ever seen. I recommend it!
