Well-aged organic compost is a traditional part of Japanese farming, and when fed to tea bushes in balanced amounts it makes for delicious green tea! No soil depleting poisonous chemical fertilizers are ever applied to the tea bushes:
Well-established tea bushes heavily mulched with traditionally applied chagusa (natural chopped up forage collected from grasslands). Chagusa keeps the moisture in the soil, acts as a nitrogen fixer aswell as makes the soil fertile, protects the tea bushes roots, makes for a bouncy walk-through experience, and results in delicious high quality green tea:
